The Reason of the Campaign
The reason for starting the campaign
The main task of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), which is a subisdiary organization of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, is to regulate the market of agricultural products within its’ product range; especially grains, and take measures in order to protect both the producer and the consumer.
Wheat, one of the grains that is under the main activity field of TMO and which is the main raw material of bread, has come to a more strategic position in the world where there is a struggle against hunger.
The waste of bread, which is a food product present on every table in our society and which is sacred since it is identified with the word blessing, deeply affects our Ministry and our Foundation when the work, sacrifice and effort of the farmer while growing wheat is taken into consideration.
Also, it is considered that all the people in the world that are suffering from hunger have a right in every slice of bread that is wasted.
The annual financial loss of our country due to waste of bread is 1,546 billion TL. This figure is equivalent to the 1,605 billion TL of the revenue obtained through flour exports – where Turkey is the world leader - in 2011.
While there are fluctuations in world food prices TMO, which ensures the stability of the country’s grain markets, considers the prevention of wasting the main food product bread as a part of its task.
TMO has brought bread waste into the attention of the public in 2008 and in 2012 it has made a research on the production and consumption of bread in Turkey, the consuming habits, waste of bread, where and how bread is wasted. The results of the research have been published in a book titled “Research on the Waste of Bread in Turkey”.
As a result of the research the rate of the waste showed that the society must be informed on the matter and awareness of the society must be raised that is why such a campaign was thought to be started.
The Campaign of “Preventing Bread Waste” is also a social responsibility project and was started by our Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN
on January 17, 2013.
The Campaign will be carried out with the cooperation of all the state foundations and establishments, local administrators, universities, non-governmental organizations and private sector in order to be able to reach all of the society.
